After five decades, Leander Morgan Jr. can still remember playing hide and seek in the big, two story house at the corner of Broad and Miller streets.
The one with the hidden passages and archways, the one that some New Bern residents refused to walk past. The business of that house, they knew, was a thing most people would just as soon not think about caring for the dead.
For Morgan, however, that business was something more than just normal, it was simply what his family did, dating back to 1929 when his maternal grandfather, Bishop Rivers and his brother J.D. opened their first funeral home on West Street.
