When the Reno Aces promoted Leah Withrow to be their new head groundskeeper this past winter, she became one of only four woman to hold that position in all of American professional baseball.
Originally from Gardnerville, Withrow graduated from North Dakota State University in 2018 with a bachelor s of science in sports turfgrass management, and triple minored in horticulture, crop science and business administration.
She has been working long hours, mostly on her own, for the past few months getting her brand new turf ready for opening day.
Withrow and the Reno Aces granted the RGJ access to Greater Nevada Field as she made her final preparations in anticipation of the first ballgame to be played in town since the 2019 season ended.

“This promotion feels surreal and I haven’t even fully digested what this means. I’ve watched and learned almost everything I know from the previous two groundskeepers and they both left pretty big shoes to fill, and not just because they’re men’s shoes,” said Withrow, in a press release from the club. “I hope this shows girls and women that any position is open.
