The Intimacy Experiment.
When romance author Rosie Danan first conceived of an affair between a rabbi and a former sex worker, she took the idea to her aunt who was very much against it.
“You can’t,” Danan recalled her aunt saying. “It’s just not realistic.” To settle the matter, she fired off an email to the family’s rabbi, who responded instantly with a very different verdict: “Who are we to stand in the way of love?”
That’s how we, the fortunate reading public, ended up with sentences like this: “There aren’t any rules dictating the appropriate level of attractiveness for religious leaders. At least not in Reform Judaism.”

Even though the
Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is virtual once again this year, it’s likely that many book-lovers can’t help but feel optimistic these days. With L.A. County’s vaccines rolling out ahead of schedule, coronavirus cases declining and restrictions on businesses loosening, it feels as though a return to life as it was prior to the pandemic, or at least something very close to it, is on the horizon.
However, it wasn’t long ago when the circumstances were remarkably less hopeful. Only approximately one year ago, L.A.’s independent bookstores were forced to abruptly shut down in response to a virus that most Americans still knew very little about.
And then, by the grace of Netflix, I found it – the perfect antidote. It wasn’t a romance; it was a six-part docu-series called Voices of Fire. “Hundreds of singers. Three auditions. One choir,” said the blurb. “Who’ll bring the range, and the change, to carry gospel to new heights?”
