A St Helens GP practice has been given a national award for helping patients during the COVID-19 crisis. Newton Medical Centre in Newton-le-Willows has been awarded the ‘Excellence in Supporting Patients’ prize at the Leading Healthcare Awards 2021. During the pandemic, the surgery – which is run by SSP Health which also manages two other GP practices in St Helens – created Project CARe (COVID-impact Assessment & Response Project). The initiative by the surgery’s Lead GP, Dr Olukayode Adeeko, was aided by medical placement students from the University of Liverpool. The project virtually assessed patients at risk of direct or in-direct impacts of COVID-19 and provided practical help when required.
