Photo: RFA Authorities in Vietnam have yet to set a trial date for two land rights activists detained more than a year ago for their criticism of the government in a high-profile land dispute, members of their family told RFA. Trinh Ba Phuong and Nguyen Thi Tam, of the capital Hanoi’s Duong Noi district, were arrested June 24, 2020 on charges of propagandizing against the state for posting online articles and livestreaming videos critical of the government’s brutal response to a long-running dispute over a military airport construction site about 25 miles south of the city. Phuong’s mother Can Thi Theu and brother Trinh Ba Tu were also arrested that day on the same charges and sentenced on May 5 to eight years in prison and three years on probation each on the charge of “creating, storing, disseminating anti-State materials.”

Vietnamese Facebook Users Draw Long Prison Terms For Anti-State Posts — Radio Free Asia

State Media Courts in Vietnam on Tuesday handed down prison terms to two Facebook users charged with posting articles opposing the country’s one-party communist state and calling for violence against judicial officials and police officers, according to state media reports. In north-central Vietnam’s Nghe An province, Nguyen Van Lam, 51, was sentenced to nine years in prison for posting anti-state writings and sharing videos and other content, including broadcasts by RFA, considered politically subversive. He was charged under Article 117 of Vietnam’s 2015 Criminal Code for “creating, storing, disseminating information and materials against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” a provision of Vietnamese law frequently used by authorities to stifle government critics and other peaceful voices of dissent.

Human Rights Watch Vietnamese land-rights activist Can Thi Theu is being held in solitary confinement under harsh jail conditions following her sentencing to eight years in prison for criticizing the government over its handling of a deadly land-rights clash, her daughter said Friday. Trinh Thi Thao, Theu’s daughter, told RFA’s Vietnamese Service that her mother is currently in a prison in the seat of northern Vietnam’s Hoa Binh province, where she has been placed in a cell on her own in the heat of the country’s tropical summer after being jailed for political reasons. “I just got a message that my mother is in solitary confinement, meaning that she is alone in a cell,” Thao said, adding that she had received the information about her mother from a source whose family member is in the same prison as Theu.
