4 FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – The U.S. Army Garrison Alaska Directorate of Public Works will begin work to improve the main installation gate on Gaffney Road on June 2. This project will better enable the Directorate of Emergency Services to provide security while managing vehicle traffic flow.
The Main Gate and current Visitor Center will be closed for the duration of the project, which is expected to continue into October. An alternate Visitor Center will be located at the Lazelle Gate on Lazelle Road. The Lazelle Gate will be open for inbound traffic only, and both the gate and alternate Visitor Center will be open 24/7 as of June 2. Commuters and other motorists may run into delays getting on and off Fort Wainwright this summer after post officials close the Main Gate and Visitors Center for a $2.5 million project road project that post officials say will improve traffic flow on Gaffney Road.
Post officials will open two other gates to help traffic flow into and off-post, including the Lazelle Gate, where a temporary visitor center will be set up.
While work in under way around the Main Gate, motorists will be able to enter and exit Fort Wainwright through five other gates, including two that will be temporarily reopened for the project.

Motorists may run into delays as they approach the Main Gate next month – and at the Visitor Center, for those who must stop there to get a visitors pass – while work is under way on the $2.5 million project.

“We anticipate the wait for the pass just to be about 2 to 3 minutes longer than normal,” says Fort Wainwright spokesperson Eve Baker. She says when work is completed this fall, there will be more lighting around the Visitor Center parking lot. And motorists will be able to get onto post more easily, because the project includes adding a designated lane for commercial vehicles like delivery trucks.
