The government’s non-committal response to a report evaluating the year-long virtual courts pilot is disappointing. Though occasionally lapsing into understatement and equivocation, the study is clear enough. Conceived as a way to save money, the scheme actually increased the cost of delivering criminal justice.

Green light for complaints review
A radical package of proposals to improve and expedite complaints-handling procedures was approved by the December meeting of the Law Society’s council. This was despite the fact that one of the main planks of the package – that powers to take first instance decisions in many cases be delegated to Solicitors Complaints Bureau staff – caused considerable concern.
