HELENA â Majors Phil and Lawry Smith of the Helena Corps Salvation Army Community Center announced they received marching orders and are relocating back to Washington state.
The Smiths have served the Helena community for 2-years and have been with the Salvation Army for 24 years.
The average stay for Salvation Army Majors is three to five years.
During their time with the Salvation Army, they have served along the West Coast, including San Fransico and Seattle, as social service directors.

Majs. Phil and Lawry Smith, the corps officers/administrators of The Salvation Army in Helena, will be moving to Longview, Washington, after nearly two years in Montana.
They will be replaced by Majs. Brian and Iva West, who are now serving in the Seattle area, Phil Smith said.
âItâs kind of sweet and sour,â Phil Smith said Monday, adding he and his wife were a little surprised because they have only been in Helena for two years, and an average stay is longer.
âTwo years is pretty quick,â he said. âBut it happens.â
Phil Smith said the needs of the Army are what trigger appointments and it occurs every year in June. Moves can be caused by retirement, health reasons or family emergencies.
