Mayor to probe R18m PPE corruption allegations at Joburg Property Company By Ntombi Nkosi Share Johannesburg - The City of Joburg mayor, Geoffrey Makhubo, is in receipt of a report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on allegations of financial misconduct and corruption at the Joburg Property Company (JPC), especially related to the Covid-19 response expenditure. A senior official at the JPC allegedly awarded personal protective equipment contracts irregularly, costing the municipality at least R18 million in fruitless and wasteful expenditure last year. The tender in question was awarded to four companies for deep cleaning and sanitisation services during the national state of disaster in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to the SIU report.

The Governing Council of the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism -AFFM, has issued a call for greater action to secure adequate financing for the continent s fertilizer sector at its ninth meeting held recently. During the meeting, which was held virtually, and attended by 13 institutional members, the Council adopted the report on the year 2020 activities and endorsed a work program for 2021. The Council also commended AFFM s achievements, which include the formation of a partnership with Fertilizer group -OCP Africa-, aimed at improving access to quality inputs for 430,000 smallholder rice and maize farmers. City of Joburg’s online radio hits the airwaves By Chulumanco Mahamba Share Johannesburg - The City of Joburg has launched its long-awaited online radio station, Joburg Pulse FM, in an aim to close the digital divide in this city. The city announced on Friday that the online radio station was launched at the Ivory Park Emthonjeni Taxi Rank on Thursday to close the gap of the digital divide in the city. “This powerful form of content aims to close down communication barriers by reaching out to more residents,” the city said. The radio station’s line-up currently has two slots, which include a morning show, Rise Up eGoli, between 8am and 10am and an afternoon drive show, Good Afternoon Jozi, which airs from 3pm until 5pm.
