Mayor to probe R18m PPE corruption allegations at Joburg Property Company

Johannesburg - The City of Joburg mayor, Geoffrey Makhubo, is in receipt of a report from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on allegations of financial misconduct and corruption at the Joburg Property Company (JPC), especially related to the Covid-19 response expenditure.
A senior official at the JPC allegedly awarded personal protective equipment contracts irregularly, costing the municipality at least R18 million in fruitless and wasteful expenditure last year.
The tender in question was awarded to four companies for deep cleaning and sanitisation services during the national state of disaster in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, according to the SIU report.
The Governing Council of the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism -AFFM, has issued a call for greater action to secure adequate financing for the continent s fertilizer sector at its ninth meeting held recently. During the meeting, which was held virtually, and attended by 13 institutional members, the Council adopted the report on the year 2020 activities and endorsed a work program for 2021. The Council also commended AFFM s achievements, which include the formation of a partnership with Fertilizer group -OCP Africa-, aimed at improving access to quality inputs for 430,000 smallholder rice and maize farmers. City of Joburgâs online radio hits the airwaves

Johannesburg - The City of Joburg has launched its long-awaited online radio station, Joburg Pulse FM, in an aim to close the digital divide in this city.
The city announced on Friday that the online radio station was launched at the Ivory Park Emthonjeni Taxi Rank on Thursday to close the gap of the digital divide in the city.
âThis powerful form of content aims to close down communication barriers by reaching out to more residents,â the city said.
The radio stationâs line-up currently has two slots, which include a morning show, Rise Up eGoli, between 8am and 10am and an afternoon drive show, Good Afternoon Jozi, which airs from 3pm until 5pm.

Johannesburg - Joburg Economic Development MMC Lawrence Khoza recently embarked on a mission to assist businesses to stabilise the city’s economy in Kya Sands, Lanseria City Airport and Joburg Market.
As part of the city’s reconstruction and recovery of the economy, Khoza met with various business owners in order to understand the challenges they faced as a result of Covid-19.
Khoza said businesses he visited were durable and that he was excited to learn that there is a commitment to a partnership between the public sector and the private sector.

The MMC for Economic Development in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Lawrence Khoza, met the owners and management of Wasaa Gasses and the CEO and staff of Lanseria City Airport on Monday, 22 February 2021.
Over the past few weeks, MMC Khoza has been on a quest to meet business owners to understand the challenges they face as a result of Covid-19 and slow economic growth and to establish how the City can partner with them as part of the city’s reconstruction and recovery of the economy.
These visits go a long way in addressing investor issues to ensure that the city retains existing investors and attracts new investors, while also providing the City with an opportunity to develop informed interventions that are aimed at assisting these businesses. The City is committed to creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
