Neurodivergent Students Experience Anxiety, Difficulty Focusing Amid Pandemic

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has proved mentally and physically taxing on some neurodivergent students as they have adapted to mask mandates, home learning environments and the absence of needed structure. The term neurodiverse refers to the spectrum of differences in neurological development or function present within the human population, according to Northwest Arkansas advocacy group PerspectAbility. A neurodivergent individual’s neurological development and/or function are atypical. Examples of neurodivergence include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and OCD. Certain forms of neurodivergence can cause difficulties with sensory issues while wearing a mask, and/or heightened anxiety triggered by a disruption to daily routine, said Dr. Lawrence Fung, director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project and the Adult Neurodevelopment Clinic, in a Stanford Medicine Q&A.
