Racism that is spewed out of washington, we have a significant increase in hate crimes over the last several years and its been a priority for me and for my office to be constantly proactive around Public Service announcements, community engagement, with other city agencies and Partnership Around prevention, and prosecution of hate crimes. Weve also taken steps to eliminate the gang unit that previously existed within the office to presumptively stop using gang enhancement and stop using sentencing enhancements. These are policies that will have a dramatic and significant effect on reducing Racial Disparities in sentencing, policing and in prosecution. And one of the first things i did after taking office was to implement a policy prohibiting my staff from seeking money bail and we are the first jurisdiction in the country to prohibit District Attorneys from ever asking the court to impose bail as a way to detain someone in custody.
