extraordinarily long and there s not too many people defending handing out bayonets. i vbt but, you know, overall, i think there s just more of a limit on how these items will be used. that s probably going to have the most impact. but the list of actual things that are being explicitly removed isn t extraordinarily large and i think that s probably a result of the lobbying that the law enforcement lobby did. yeah. do you think this new police data program will work? people have said we don t know how many stops are current. we don t know what ends up happening when there are interactions that are hostile between police people and citizens. do you think this is going to help? it has to help. i think part of this is again, if there s no data, we can t really understand how severe the problem is. one thing that was done i think as you know at the end of last congress, was bobby scott finally got over the threshold with his death and custody act. that is another data collection point
capitol. you any one of only a handful of elected officials willing to stand up to the law enforcement lobby to say that we need stronger enforcement and more tools to hold officers accuse of wrongdoing accountable. are you against body cameras? no. the council sent me a bad bill. i m against bad legislation. i m for body cameras and my track record speaks for that. i want to make sure we do it and do it right. i put together a task force that took a look at the privacy, issues around data collection making sure that we get it right for baltimore. if the legislature sends if the council sends me a bad bill i can t, i can t sign it. but that doesn t mean we re not going to have body cameras and it certainly doesn t mean that i m against them. my track record is clear there. thank you so much more taking the time to join us today. we appreciate it.
it s cost us 1 trillion dollars and resulted in incarcerating millions over nonviolent offenses. i a new book argues that the money the government can make legalizely this sticky icky could help us out of our economic troubles. doug, welcome to the show. thanks so much. what s your dream scenario here? is weed going to be treated like alcohol and almost anyone can buy and sell it anywhere and it s taxed? how would do you it? something like that. cannabis needs to get out of the controlled substances acwhere it currently resides as a schedule 1 felony whereas cocaine and methare in schedule 2. i d like to see cannabis out of there as a father and patriot to get $30 billion a year into the legitimate economy instead of going to the cartels. one of the interesting things you do in your book is you say follow the money. when you follow the money, you see that the war for the war on drugs against cannabis is the pharmaceuticals industry, the private prisons, law enforcement
policing on steroids. to see the militarized response. it s almost as if your own government has declared war on you. so i think to move away from persecution and surveillance to protection and service, is what this step is helping us to move towards. so i think it s a wonderful first step. i think the president is on point when he talks about the importance of engaging the community. we want the move from occupation to cooperation. that s when law enforcement brings about justice and of course, on the wheelingss of that will be police. how are they reacting to demilitarizing police today? i think it s tough to say just because the announcement came today, but it is important to note the law enforcement lobby is very involved in this process and spoke out in support of a lot of these programs very early on. overall, the list of items that are explicitly banned it isn t
