oregon. so you know, things change. california. they have now got a lethal force bill that is underway there that would limit what police officers could do and there s been a lot vatting. the measure would direct police officers to use deadly force only when necessary in defense of human life. but doesn t explicitly consider what is necessary. could courts consider the actions of both the police and the suspect in determining when a police officer has opened fire. people who have lost loved once, say, this need stricter control and others say, it s so watered down, and in the case we covered this female officer was gunned down and pinned there. other officers couldment get to her. apparently, there s an investigation, and she ended up passing away. quick comment from both of you. yeah, any time there s a los of law enforcement life, it s
initial moments when the president was notified, he reached out by phone to leadership in congress and really had to be the person who could come out and speak on behalf of the nai nation in a way that would provide some measure of comfort and resolve and that is a new sort of lane for president trump on a day when the country does look for leadership to bring people together. we also saw it in house speaker paul ryan and the democratic leader nancy pelosi who spoke about being on the same page today in honoring the work of the officers who i always say have this unique place in law enforcement life. they interact in a very positive way with dozens, sometimes hundreds and thousands of members of the public who come to the capitol and are around there in a way that many people in law enforcement don t have that direct interaction with huge crowds in a happy way day to day. at the same time, they re some of the most tactically trained and recognize they have high-value targets in their
encounter. even as the numbers climb to nearly 1,000 civilians this year. and while we tend to acknowledge the inherent danger in policing and while each loss of law enforcement life is tragic, the number of police fatalities this year is among the lowest on record. by one tally, 124 officers have been killed this year, with 39 of those deaths involving firearms. it s also important to note that killing civilians is not a routine part of policework. in fact, most officers never even discharge their weapons. but if you dive into the new database compiled by the washington post you will find certain unneshing details about civilian deaths. oftentimes the shooting officers are repeat offenders. according to the washington post, more than 50 police officers involved in fatal shootings this year had previously fired their guns in deadly on-duty shootings. for a handful of officers it was their third fatal shooting.
