棒壘球在2008年北京奧運後，2012年倫敦、2016年里約奧運都缺席，直到本屆東京奧運，以主辦國自選項目的方式回歸，不過下屆巴黎奧運確定又要缺席，棒壘球要再重返五環賽場最快也要等到2028年洛杉磯奧運。
WBSC在28日舉行線上執委會，會長法卡利也在會中發表戰略計畫，以確保棒壘球從2028年洛杉磯奧運起，永久納入奧運正式項目，執委會也一致通過該計畫。
「棒壘球預計將成為2020年東京奧運最大且最受關注的賽事之一，日本和世界各地的運動迷都在期待。」法卡利說：「我有信心，在東奧期間，棒壘運動將會向世人展現，自從2008年北京奧運之後，至今棒壘運動有何成長、如何更能掌握奧運理想、未來能夠成為奧運的永久項目。」
