Fort Smith receives $10 6 million from American Rescue Plan funding

Fort Smith Times Record The city of Fort Smith received more than $10.6 million of an expected $21.2 million in American Rescue Plan federal funding, and some of that could be used for sewer line work required in the city s federal consent decree. The city s board of directors was notified by city management Wednesday of the funds. There are regulations on how the funds can be spent, and infrastructure for water/sewer is included, Fort Smith s Deputy City Administrator Jeff Dingman wrote in an email to the Times Record. Staff is working on how those funds might be incorporated into the project and rate planning we already have underway.

Parks, fire funding emphasized; funded by quarter-cent sales tax

Fort Smith Times Record It s unclear whether Fort Smith s quarter-percent sales tax will be renewed, but city directors are intent on supporting the services it supplements. The sales tax, which provided $5.6 million in 2020 that was split between the parks and fire departments, gives the two departments revenue to make upgrades such as those seen recently at Harley Wilson Park. Set to expire Sept. 22, 2022, if not renewed through a vote, the board recently discussed what the tax means for the city. At the Friday Board of Directors workshop, City Administrator Carl Geffken said the time before the expiration date will allow the board, subcommittees and residents to decide how they would like this tax to be configured before it expires in September 2022.This discussion came in light of the projected sunset of the three-quarters-cent sales tax, which is set to sunset in 2023 after sales and use tax bond issues are fully paid off.

Better communication, info requested on Fort Smith consent decree

Fort Smith Times Record The Fort Smith Board of Directors is asking for better communication and articulation of the status of the consent decree. At the board s Friday workshop in the Blue Lion, Ward 1 Director Jarred Rego requested the city communicate progress, goals, and needs of fixing sewage runoff into the Arkansas River in plain language. Rego argued this would help city officials speak with their residents about the particulars of a federal mandate that has raised city sewer rates 167% since 2015. “We really need to take this moment of pause coming out of the pandemic to reimagine the way we communicate about this project that we’re talking about, Rego said.
