California boasts more national parks than any other state, beating out even famously scenic states like Alaska and Utah. And the Golden State s 10 national parks certainly show off the diverse landscapes you can find on the west coast, from the towering redwoods of NorCal, the arid deserts of SoCal, the iconic flora of Joshua Tree and the surreal geologic snapshots of past volcanic eruptions and the movement of glaciers.
From crown jewels of the whole system like Yosemite to remote marine ecosystems like Channel Islands National Park, California s national parks certainly pack a punch. Indeed, not only are there ten parks proper, but a bevy of other protected places run by the national parks service, including national monuments, wilderness areas, seashores, and preserves.

Have you ever heard of the Lava Beds National Monument? It is a national monument located in California. It is considered to be California s best kept secrete because not a lot of people know about it. I feel like our principal should approve on going to a field trip in this area because there are many adventurous sites and fun activities there. Back in 1925 president Calvin Coolidge mad Lava Beds Monument a national monument. This monument only attracts around 130,000 visitors each year. The National Beds Monument compares to the Yosemite National Park which attracts nearly four million visitors each year. But this park of underground caves and volcanic rock is full of history and geological wonder.

Some in the Nikkei community have wondered why the Tule Lake Committee is feuding with an Indigenous tribe. There have been comments that this looks bad for optics to have one community of color quarreling with another community of color.
“Mass Murder in California’s Empty Quarter: A Tale of Tribal Treachery at the Cedarville Rancheria” by Ray A. March devotes a chapter to this issue.
March opens the book with a mass shooting that had taken place in 2014 in Modoc County, where the former Tule Lake Segregation Center is situated. The shooting incident drew little national attention since it had not exacted a huge death toll, had occurred in rural America, and involved mostly Indigenous-on-Indigenous killing.

In her career, Shanda Ochs has had exactly one place of work: Lassen Volcanic National Park. She’s been a ranger in the volcano-studded hydrothermal wonderland for a shade over 20 years, running educational programs, interpreting the nature and culture, leading the visitor center team and providing information to guests and the media.
We are kind of obsessed with Lassen over here, so we were thrilled when Ochs agreed to answer some burning questions about her job as a ranger and her experiences working in the park as part of SFGATE’s new Ask a Ranger series.
