The countyâs public schools have seen a persistent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases since Thanksgiving. Officials said Monday that if the trend continues, Pitt County Schools may have a virtual start for the spring semester.
Since the week before Thanksgiving break, when 11 school-affected cases were reported, the number has more than tripled.
Pitt County Schools Superintendent Ethan Lenker told members of the Board of Education that if winter break is accompanied by a similar spread in the virus, it might be necessary to delay the date that in-person classes resume.
âI know that goes against everything Iâve said about wanting to get kids back in the building,â he said.
