River Master Plan. The plan is the first to cover the entire L.A. River and proposes a 51-mile connected open space to manage floodwaters while improving natural ecosystems and public wellbeing. Calculations based on information from the US Census Bureau indicate that 25% of Californians live within a 30-minute drive of the LA River and over one million people live within one mile. The plan represents a combined effort by L.A. County Public Works, Geosyntec, OLIN and Gehry Partners. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry has revealed his ideas for updating the masterplan for the Los Angeles River, which include platform parks on stilts bridging the waterway. The American architecture studio is working with landscape architect Laurie Olin and engineering firm Geosyntec Consultants to update plans to revitalise a 51-mile stretch of river drainage in Los Angeles (LA).   I could not have imagined Vancouver becoming such a city of contrasts even 30 or so years ago when I was writing the original Vanishing Vancouver book. Certainly, it was in its buildings – the West End had already become a concrete forest when I was a teenager, a forest that became glassy and strata-titled as it expanded through the downtown peninsula in the 1990s. But the city still seemed to be a middle-class kind of place, a yin and yang town of towers and apartments for some and wooden houses for others. To a large extent, it reflected the choices available all across urban Canada.
