Out of the Darkness
With his latest chronicle of a serial killer, a filmmaker brings a writer’s quest for justice to light.

You can call filmmaker Joe Berlinger a true-crime pioneer, as many have, but he much prefers to be known as a social-justice documentarian. There s a lot of irresponsible filmmaking out there that just wallows in the injustices of other people without any kind of social-justice element, Berlinger says. My threshold for wanting to get involved in a story is, is there a light we can shine on it? Is there a greater reason to tell this story?

Little was a serial offender, that much we know. After multiple arrests, Little didn’t serve a lot of prison time, which left him free to be a serial killer. Does the Little case have implications for criminal justice reform?
“It’s hard to fathom. I mean, how does someone get away with that…?”
Most crimes are not reported, most reported crime does not end in arrest, a sizeable percentage of those arrested are not prosecuted, the overwhelming majority of those prosecuted are plea-bargained to a lesser crime, most arrests for felonies do not get prison time and most violent offenders serve less than three years.

LOS ANGELES (AP) The man authorities say was the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history, with nearly 60 confirmed victims, died Wednesday in California. He was 80.
Samuel Little, who had diabetes, heart trouble and other ailments, died at a California hospital, according to the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was serving a life sentence for multiple counts of murder.
… A career criminal who had been in and out jail for decades, Little denied for years he’d ever killed anyone.
Then, in 2018, he opened up to Texas Ranger James Holland, who had been asked to question him about a killing it turned out Little didn’t commit. During approximately 700 hours of interviews, however, Little provided details of scores of slayings only the killer would know.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Samuel Little, the man the FBI calls the most prolific serial killer in US history has died.
Little was convicted for several violent crimes he committed in San Diego when he lived in the area in 1984. In my mind he represented an evil person, and the world is better without him, said Wayne Spees, a former San Diego police officer who arrested Little in 1984.
