I came to Laurentian University in 1971, having recently completed post-graduate studies in the UK. Even though Laurentian was founded in 1960, it was the new kid on the block still, as it were, in its swaddling clothes in 1971, relative to the panoply of well-established and hallowed universities in Ontario like, for instance, University of Toronto and Queen’s.

What it lacked in vintage and reputation, however, it more than made up for in excitement and enthusiasm. I remember the place brimming with energy, populated by many young, newly minted professors, keen to get down to the business of teaching students, largely from the North, themselves keen to be part of an institution that the North had built and nurtured.
