Higher Risk of Stroke Increased by Preeclampsia

Higher Risk of Stroke Increased by Preeclampsia April 27, 2021 Preeclampsia is a condition during pregnancy where there is a sudden rise in blood pressure and swelling, mostly in the face, hands, and feet. It is the most common complication to occur during pregnancy. It generally develops during the third trimester and affects about 1 in 20 pregnancies. Preeclampsia is not cured until the baby is delivered. Until the mother’s blood pressure comes down, she is at risk for complications such as stroke. In some cases, a woman may experience high blood pressure after giving birth, which is known as postpartum preeclampsia. Now new research by the University of Utah (U of U) Health reports that preeclampsia during pregnancy increases stroke risk later in life.
