While he is the co-star of McDonald and Dodds, it is unclear what his first name is.
Throughout the series, the detective is simply known as Dodds and in typical police fashion, everyone refers to each other by their surname.
This makes Dodds even more mysterious as we learn early on his colleague McDonald and boss Houseman s first names are Lauren and House respectively.
But this isn t a detail viewers haven t picked up on as it just hasn t yet been mentioned.

I WONDER how detective pairings come about in real-life? I don’t imagine human resources engage in an elaborate matching service. Officers just have to take who they get. Television is different. On television, it is practically the law that opposites should attract. It has been the same since the original and best match, that of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Sherlock was a flash of lightning, Watson was a stick in the mud; Sherlock was brilliant but mercurial; Dr Watson was a steady as he goes type. To put it another way, the Donny and Marie Osmond way, it is best if one detective is a little bit country and the other is a little bit rock and roll. If nothing else it helps the viewer distinguish between them and generates friction, adding to the drama.
It’s a cliché of film and TV to declare that “the location itself is
another character in the drama” – perhaps even “
the most important character in the story“.

But it’s certainly true that McDonald & Dodds makes the most of its filming location in Bath, where two detectives have formed an unlikely crime-solving partnership among the Georgian terraces and honey-coloured limestone of the city.
Jason Watkins stars as Dodds (first name still unknown), a Detective Sergeant who’s been paired up with Londoner DCI Lauren McDonald (Tala Gouveia). Here are the locations you’ll see on screen, across seasons one and two.
