High School Sports: Soccer: Lady Bobcats lose 2 by one goal each (4/20/21)

Tuesday, April 20, 2021 The Berryville Lady Bobcats didn’t play poorly in two losses last week. They simply were the victims of bad timing and bad luck. Berryville lost 2-1 to Dardanelle on Tuesday, April 13, then gave up a second-half lead in a 3-2 loss to Gentry on Friday. Against Dardanelle, Berryville fell behind 1-0, then fought back in the second half to tie the score on a goal by Lucy Reyes. But the Lady Bobcats were called for a handball-in-the-box penalty with about five minutes remaining, and the Lady Sand Lizards converted the penalty kick for 2-1 victory. Against Gentry, Berryville led 2-1 on goals by Lauren Compton and Reyes and seemed to be in control.

Against Prairie Grove, the Lady Bobcats had to play into a howling wind in the first half, but took a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick by Lauren Compton and a goal by Mia Thurman. A red card left the Lady Bobcats one player short for the entire second half, but Berryville was able to hang on. “Luckily that was a strong wind and we were going with the wind and we could just send long balls when we needed to,” Berryville coach Aaron Hall said. “And it’s hard to move the ball down the field into the wind.”

Morrilton beat Berryville 58-33 at the Hillbilly Activity Center, ending a season in which the Lady Bobcats seemed to overachieve just by reaching the regional. “They’re a really good team,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said of Morrilton. “Watching film, I knew they were really athletic and they had a couple of kids that could really shoot it. And they rebound. Just a really good basketball team. And I think they prove that — they won the regional.”
