Spain Bans Hunting of Wolves But Division Persists Over Predator Voice of America 25 May 2021, 23:35 GMT+10 MADRID - After losing 23 sheep in a wolf pack attack one night, Laura Serrano Isla might have been expected to want revenge. Instead, this farmer is a surprise supporter of Spain s decision to introduce a nationwide ban on hunting wolves. The wolves killed my sheep because we left our animals unprotected and they are predators, she told VOA. We have to live together, and people must realize that the wolf has an important role in hunting wild boar, rabbits and deer. As long as we protect our livestock, we can live together.

Spanish farmers deeply split as ban on hunting wolves is extended

Luis Suárez, coordinator of conservation for the WWF in Spain, dismisses claims that the ban makes the coexistence between farmers and wolves impossible. “In many areas such as Zamora and Galicia a coexistence between wolves and farming has been achieved,” Suárez says. “No one really knows how much damage wolves do. In some places they don’t report attacks, in others they are exaggerated or even dishonest. Also, you have to put the losses in the context of the total population of 30 million cows, sheep and goats.” Fernando Rodríguez Tábara, a 22-year-old farmer who keeps 21 mastiff dogs to protect the 120 cows on his farm in Zamora, supports the hunting ban.
