Dry cleaning business facing challenges in the pandemic

KLKN-TV TLC Dry Cleaners and Hangers Cleaners say their stores have struggled during the pandemic. January 24, 2021 6:08 pm LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – According to the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute, nearly 30 percent of dry cleaners will be forced to shutdown in the next 18 months. “Ever since the crash of 2008, dry cleaning has been a declining industry,” TLC Dry Cleaners plant manager Beth Waller said. “A lot of businesses are going casual. Now with COVID, people are working from home. You don’t need to put pants on at all let alone have them dry cleaned.” Hangers Cleaners is down 30 percent in sales. At the start of the pandemic, sales were down 80 percent. The building on 21st and G Street has been a dry cleaning business for over 100 years, operating under different names.

Americans working from home in casual wear no longer need to dry clean their work clothes. Business has also been hurt because of fewer parties, weddings, and other occasions to dress up. The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute believes 30% of dry cleaners could be forced to shut down over the next 18 months. Those who remain open are trying to adjust. Dawn Avery with the National Cleaners Association says, “Our plan is to, to help them reinvent themselves.” She says many cleaners are now offering new services like alterations or wash and fold for families. “Because households are chaotic now with home schooling and working from home, and things you didn’t have to do before,” Avery adds.

Be Local: Dry cleaners have had difficult time during pandemic

The past 10 months have been a most difficult cycle for laundry. Just ask dry cleaners. Two area long-time, dry cleaning business’ have seen significant drops in the past year, and both continue to fight for survival. “We’re down about 40% compared with the previous year,” said Sam Veltri, owner of Veltri Cleaners on Jefferson Avenue in Washington. “I’m fine, I feel for some of our customers. Some have lost jobs. Some have never slowed down. Others who brought many shirts and pants at a time, now bring maybe one shirt and one pair of pants.” While dry cleaners are not alone in struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, the future appears a little better for the airlines and restaurants as eventually business should rebound as vaccines make traveling and going out to lunch or dinner less worrisome or troublesome for customers.
