Last fall, Latvian Economics Minister Janis Vitenbergs and Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas signed a memorandum of understanding on a joint offshore wind farm project for generation of renewable energy.
The Latvian Economics Ministry said that the project has been named Elwind, and the next step would involve drafting a detailed work schedule and securing co-funding from the Connect Europe Facility (CEF).
In 2021, the developers plan to choose the location for the wind farm in the Gulf of Riga and start evaluating the project s environmental impact. According to its National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030, Latvia aims to increase its installed wind energy capacity from roughly 70 MW to 800 MW.
