COVID-19: OC s Case Rate Remains Lower than Neighboring Counties; Hospitalizations Stay Low

O C turns to community health centers for more equity in distributing COVID-19 vaccines

Print Though the Latino community has taken the brunt of the pandemic in Orange County, the population only accounts for 12% of the people who have received at least one vaccine dose in the county. There have been concerns that the county hasn’t adequately included underserved communities in its vaccine distribution plans, which focus on mass sites called Super PODs at Disneyland, Soka University and the soon-to-be site at the Anaheim Convention Center. According to state data, the Latino population makes up about 35% of the county’s population but accounts for 49% of the county’s COVID-19 cases. White people account for about 28% of the county’s COVID-19 cases, yet make up 48% of the recipients of at least one dose of a vaccine in the county, according to county data.

COVID-19 Vaccination Site Opens in Santa Ana

COVID-19 Vaccination Site Opens in Santa Ana Orange County opened its third vaccination point of distribution (POD) at Santa Ana City College on Feb 17. The latest POD is smaller than the county’s super sites and can administer up to 1,000 doses per day. “It really is incredible news that we have as much vaccine now coming into Santa Ana, because for a while, as recent as a couple of weeks ago, it was a different story,” Santa Ana Mayor Vicente Sarmiento said at a city council meeting on Feb. 16. The POD’s goal is to provide at least 240 vaccinations per hour. The POD at Soka University exceeded 300 vaccinations per hour.
