NEW STUDY: Facebook is primary driver of COVID-19 misinformation in the Latinx community, fueling vaccine hesitancy

Media Matters For America WASHINGTON, April 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/  According to a new study, among Latinx respondents who have not yet been vaccinated, 51% say they will likely not get vaccinated against COVID-19 at this time this number rises to 67% within Spanish-speaking households. The two most commonly cited reasons against taking the vaccine are around safety and effectiveness, which are especially prevalent in Spanish-speaking households. The study goes on to find that misinformation around COVID-19 and the vaccines play a critical role in fueling vaccine hesitancy among Latinos. Facebook (49%) and local news (39%) are the top reported platforms spreading inaccurate and harmful information around the vaccines.

Voto Latino and Media Matters Create Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab

The organizations Voto Latino and Media Matters for America have teamed up to create a Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab to help stop the spread of mis- and disinformation on democracy and public health. The new project will combine Media Matters media intelligence and disinformation expertise with Voto Latino s knowledge of Latinx communities and data on impacted audiences. The lab will be run by Voto Latino co-founding president and CEO María Teresa Kumar, Media Matters for America president and CEO Angelo Carusone, and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez. Last year, Latinos were disproportionately targeted with voter fraud misinformation, fear-mongering tactics, and disinformation about COVID-19, all of which inspired this collaboration.

Voto Latino and Media Matters for America Launch $22 Million Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab

(PRNewsfoto/Voto Latino) WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/  In response to the threat of mis- and disinformation on democracy and public health, Voto Latino, the largest Latinx voter registration organization in the U.S., and Media Matters for America, the nation s premier media watchdog organization, are announcing the launch of the Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab. The collaborative effort will work to better understand and strategically combat misinformation at all stages and on all mediums, seeking primarily to influence Latinx individuals. The Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab will be chaired by Voto Latino co-founding President and CEO María Teresa Kumar, Media Matters for America President and CEO Angelo Carusone and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez. It will, for the first time, establish the systems and network necessary to help combat mis- and disinformation that further polarizes and isolates Latinx voters.
