While the equality of men and women was a founding principle of the European Union, the continent’s gender pay gap has long been stuck at 14%.
This year, a spate of powerful new efforts by a number of member states to close the gender pay gap has culminated in European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal for sweeping new legislation that would compel companies throughout Europe to share salary data broken down by gender and prohibit them from asking job applicants their salary history.

Equal pay for equal work may become a reality in Europe, as the European Union’s new female leader takes advantage of a sea change in societal and corporate thinking about gender equality to realize a long unfulfilled goal.

That transparency will make a huge difference, says Henrike von Platen, who launched the Fair Pay Innovation Lab nonprofit to help businesses audit their pay parity. Most companies believe they’re paying their employees fairly, and are surprised to learn they’re not, she says. “Most bosses want to do the right thing, not suck the last honey out of a person for as little as they can get it.”
Dennis Hall: Making a four-day week work
By Dennis Hall 16
About 18 months ago, I began experimenting with a four-day working week across the business.
The first five months were predictable and then lockdown happened, where several more variables were added to the mix. It has been interesting, though not quite the success I expected it to be.
My original five-day week recently morphed into a six-, occasionally seven-, day week. Clearly something is not right, but it’s been hard to figure out precisely what.
Yet I remain convinced a four-day week is achievable for everyone in the business, including me. As such, I’ve been doing a lot of research into people and businesses that have managed to successfully improve efficiency by 20 per cent or more, which is what is needed.
