Spanish Cortés, off limits

Gemma Cruz Araneta The first electoral law of the Spanish empire, contained in the Decree of 29 January 1810, called for representatives from Las Islas Filipinas, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Chile, Venezuela, in short, from all of Spain’s colonies in America and Asia to join the Cortés, that is, the Spanish parliament. The Philippine representative was Don Ventura de los Reyes who together with other delegates signed the hallmark Cadiz Constitution of 1812. In the 1812 Cadiz constitution, the colonies of Spain were given the status of provinces, these were no longer overseas possession but were considered integral parts of the Kingdom of Spain where all its peninsular laws applied

May 10, 2021 at 4:09 AM Dr. Gonzalo “Zal” Valez, Deputy Mayor of West Orange to former township Mayors Sam Spina and John McKeon and current Mayor Rob Parisi, passed away on April 28. Velez, born in the Philippines, held a Doctorate in Education and served as an Education Commissioner under Ronald Reagan. He later ran the International Cultural and Educational Association and also had a long career as an educator and author. Published February 22, 2021, 12:33 AM WALA LANG Seniors old enough remember cannon booms, smoke, and flashes of light reaching Dewey Boulevard from across the bay, from Bataan and Corregidor where Filipino and American soldiers were making a stand against Japanese invaders. That was exactly 79 years ago in February 1942. Manila and Clark Field were bombed by the Japanese on the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 8, 1941. War had begun and President Manuel L. Quezon and Gen. Douglas MacArthur evacuated government and the military high command to Corregidor on Dec. 26, just before the Japanese entered Manila the following week on Jan. 2.
