First Commercial Scale Offshore Wind Farm in the United States | Off Grid Energy Independence

The United States Secretary of the Interior has announced approval of the construction and operation of the Vineyard Wind project the first large-scale, offshore wind project in the United States. Vineyard Wind 1 is an 800 MW project located 15 miles off the coast of Martha s Vineyard and will be the first commercial scale offshore wind project in the United States. The project will generate electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, create 3,600 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) job years over the life of the project, save ratepayers $1.4 billion over the first 20 years of operation and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million tons per year.

The $2.8 billion installation proposed by Vineyard Wind LLC will be the first major wind farm in waters off the U.S., which has lagged behind Europe and Asia in generating power at sea. It sets the stage for other developers seeking approval to build more than a dozen other wind projects from Massachusetts to North Carolina.

Today’s offshore wind project announcement demonstrates that we can fight the climate crisis, while creating high-paying jobs and strengthening our competitiveness at home and abroad,” said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in a statement. “This project is an example of the investments we need to achieve the Biden-Harris administration’s ambitious climate goals, and I’m proud to be part of the team leading the charge on offshore wind.”  Since 2017, the Vineyard Wind project has been subject to a federal review process that generated more than 30,000 public comments, more than 90% of which supported the project, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior.
