Researchers create Goldene — a single atomic layer of gold with semiconductor properties

Researchers from Linköping University claim to be the first to have successfully created sheets of gold composed of just a single atomic layer. Goldene has arrived, and just like the much-heralded 2D wonder material Graphene it is said to deliver some highly attractive properties.

Move over, graphene. Your blinged-up cousin, goldene, has entered the scene. Researchers have accidentally created a single-atom layer of gold.

Meet goldene : this gilded cousin of graphene is also one atom thick

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Calibration Method Leads to Erroneous Results

Thor Balkhed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is often used to determine the chemical composition of materials. It was developed in the 1960s and is accepted as a standard method in materials science. Researchers at Linköping University, Sweden, however, have shown that the method is often used erroneously. It is, of course, an ideal in research that the methods used are critically examined, but it seems that a couple of generations of researchers have failed to take seriously early signals that the calibration method was deficient. This was the case also for a long time in our own research group. Now, however, we hope that XPS will be used with greater care, says Grzegorz Greczynski, senior lecturer in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Linköping University.
