16 Edition of the Global Radio Guide (Summer 2021) Now Available
Sometimes in life, what is old becomes new again. Familiar names and voices we long have placed into the recesses of our minds, suddenly spring back to the forefront.
It can be that way with radio as well. What we sometimes consider to be antique transmissions of a bygone era can re-emerge in a digital world, as if time had merely paused. They ensnare the attention of both those who were around for the glory days, as well as those hearing these signals for the first time.
Such is the case with the recently resurfaced “Russian Woodpecker.” The Cold War-era stalwart that once placed its distinct signal across large swaths of the HF band, is once again being heard amongst the crackles of static on shortwave radios and SDRs around the world.
Transparency is great unless you have something to hide. And it appears some large hospitals do.
At the beginning of 2021, a new federal government rule required hospitals to make public a list of 300 standard charges for all items and services. However, a new analysis shows that 65 out of the nation’s largest 100 hospitals were non-compliant with the new regulation.
In Tennessee, less than 20% of hospitals were fully compliant, and in Nashville, HCA and Vanderbilt, as of this writing, were among those that hadn’t met the requirements. To their credit, Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital has a price estimator posted on their website. Ascension Hospital appears to be quite comfortable with the spirit of transparency to enhance a consumer-friendly experience.

Stephen DUBNER: So I think the general perception is that the American healthcare system is just messed up. Is the American healthcare system as messed up as most people seem to think it is?
Zack COOPER: Oh, I think absolutely the U.S. health system is as messed up as people think it is, probably more so.
