Courage and cowardice
In the last four years we have seen the courage of numerous career diplomats and civil servants make a difference. Alexander Vindman, Fiona Hill, Chris Krebs and Brad Raffensperger are but a few of the many public servants that defied threats of violence and danger to their careers, to simply do what was right.
What we have failed to do is to narrate the abject cowardice present in much of the Republican Party. This is well illustrated in Sen. Marco Rubio. From his reversal of his own comprehensive immigration plan, through his refusal to stand up to the National Rifle Association after the slaughter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and his reprehensible enabling of Donald Trump, he has consistently favored his own political fortunes over his oath to protect and defend the Constitution.
The budding movement for a 68th county in Florida is, at best, a fool’s errand.
The last thing Florida needs is another county, and all of the offices and financial costs associated with one another courthouse, commission, court clerk, public defender, tax collector, property appraiser, school board and superintendent, sheriff, supervisor of elections, health department, emergency manager, ad infinitum.
Within the next decade, we may see a movement in the opposite direction, to merge Florida counties as an effective means of reducing the costs of small, local, regionally redundant governments. As a state, Florida should be marching toward 40 counties, not 68.
