welcome back, everybody. early estimates show that voter turnout for this week s democratic primary in virginia was among the highest since the early 90s. the state hasn t released the final tally yet but npr reports about 8% of registered voters turned out. that number may sound low but it s the second highest turnout since 1994. former virginia governor terry mcauliffe won the nomination and now there are questions if this enthusiasm here could signal good news for the democratic party in future elections across the country, especially when it comes to midterm elections. let s bring in presidential historian larry sabido, director of the center for politics. there s a reason, larry, i m not sure if you saw us tossing to break a little bit early, that we paid homage to the girl from
accompanying him is his wife, as well as his daughter and her husband, jared kushner. larry sabido, a familiar face on fox news, had this to say about the first trip. he said there has never been a president taking his first presidential trip be e being dogged by a scandal like this. that started with the firing of james comey. now we have the appointment of a special counsel that will be doing this investigation. the question for the white house and one question we ll be asking on the show is whrorpb the president can turn the page, focus more on international affairs, focus more on some relationships as the president waves and enters wear force one. according to sources to operate air force one will cost about $200,000 per hour. the president will be on that plane that has a 4,000 square
focus in this new year as it pertains to resuscitating dr. carson s viability? we want to get our message in front of as many voters as possible, especially those voters who agree with dr. carson s message of wanting to heal what s wrong with our country and revive the american spirit once again. we re going to focus on that through our social media, through our volunteers, through our door-knocking as we move forward. okay, heal the country, i know that s the big moniker, but specifically, can voters expect to hear something more concrete from dr. carson, the campaign, from you, the communications director, in this new year. i think that you will. i think dr. carson s been pretty specific about what he wants to do in terms of taxes, in terms of dealing with isis, and in terms of dealing with the race problems that this country faces. and i think you ll continue to hear those kinds of plans and programs as we move forward. so, larry, as the new campaign manager there, ed
let s talk a little bit more about the changes, particularly in ben carson s campaign. i m joined now by larry sabido. happy new year! happy new year, fred. so what do you think? new campaign manager, communications director, what does this mean to you for ben carson? fred, it s never a good thing when a campaign has a shake up, and especially when the shake up comes with the month to go before iowa. you do not shake up a winning campaign. that just doesn t happen, at least not very often. so, frankly, campaigns are a lot about luck. they re about the man beating the moment or the candidate meeting the moment. and unfortunately for ben carson, the focus of the campaign has shifted from domestic issues where he s strong, to national security issues, where he s week. hmm. the campaign s use of the word invigorat invigorate,, this is about invigorating the campaign. when i spoke with the new campaign manager yesterday, he
statewide job openings in this election year in virginia include governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. all the big ones. the republican party of virginia handpicked their candidates for those jobs this year. they scrapped the whole primary vote thing and used a convention to crown their candidates. that resulted in the off the hook far right slate of republican nominees they got themselves. larry sabido says this is the most right wing caucus to run in the state ever. the dynamic ended up being, in the lieutenant governor s race, the guy on the right was very heavily favored to win the lieutenant governor nomination. he seemed to have everything going for him, impressive resume. he worked as secretary of technology for a previous virginia governor, carries himself really well, and is really good at politics, has a great personal story. really smart, he s the eldest
