City Councilors Joanne McKenna and Richard Serino have requested a security presence during Council meetings when the meetings become open to public again at City Hall.
The Council has been meeting remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Public Safety Sub-Committee, chaired by Councilor-at-Large Jessica Giannino, discussed the proposal Monday.
“I believe we should have some sort of security in the Chambers when the public is allowed to come back to our meetings,” said McKenna, noting the rise in incidents nationally regarding the safety of the public.
Serino said, “these are different times for sure.”
The Ward 6 councilor recalled an incident following a Council meeting last summer when “us councilors had to actually be escorted out of City Hall by the Revere Police Department because there were crowds that were very much in our faces after a contentious vote.”
The Revere City Council unanimously elected Councilor-at-Large Anthony Zambuto as president at its first meeting of the new year Monday night.
After recording the 11-0 vote, City Clerk Ashley Melnik announced, “Councilor Zambuto is the new City Council president for 2021.”

In his acceptance speech, Zambuto said he was humbled by the support of his colleagues.

Giannino to Be Inaugurated as State Representative Today in Boston
Jessica Giannino is scheduled to be inaugurated as state representative for the Sixteenth Suffolk District in a ceremony today (Wednesday) at noon in the House Chambers at the State House.
Giannino, a Revere councillor-at-large, is succeeding RoseLee Vincent in the seat that encompasses Revere, Chelsea, and Saugus.
First City Council Meeting of Year is Monday Night
The Revere City Council will be meeting for the first time in the new year Monday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held remotely and be available for viewing on Zoom and Revere TV.
