Construction boom forces Winnipeg to add staff for planning and permitting

Article content Due to a sustained uptick in Winnipeg’s construction and renovation industry, the City is moving forward with hiring up to 22 additional temporary staff in the Planning, Property and Development Department (PP&D) to keep up with an “extraordinary” increase in residential building and trades permit applications and to assist with permit applicants through the City’s online-digital permitting system. The total expenditure for the initiative is $900,000, which will be offset by an equivalent increase in permit fee revenue, a report by the public service stated. The situation is a positive economic story, Coun. Scott Gillingham (St. James), chairman of the City’s Finance Committee, told media on Friday.
