Surfside condo collapse: For first time, reporters get close up look at the pile of rubble Condo demolition brings hope in collapse search Replay Video UP NEXT SURFSIDE – For the first time since the Champlain Towers South partially collapsed on June 24, journalists Tuesday were given a close-up look at the rubble. Immediately after the collapse, officials blocked off the area and closed down streets nearby. Journalists were restricted from getting close to the site, usually being forced to stand about half a block away. But in groups of about 25, officials Tuesday evening took reporters and photographers to the site. Journalists were only able to see the massive three-story pile caused by the demolition Sunday night of the remaining South tower. They were not given closer access to the area on the east side, where some 200 search-and-rescue workers toiled on the rubble pile from the original collapse, where bodies are expected to be found.
