Indigenous people have had and continue to have an incredible presence in the state of Illinois, from Cahokia to the south to Chicago in the north and throughout the Illinois River Valley. The HCC Diversity Committee will host speaker Jenny L. Davis to discuss these histories and realities and how they shape the everyday lives not only of Native American and Indigenous peoples in and from Illinois but everyone who calls the state home.<br/><br/> Jenny L. Davis is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and an Associate Professor of Anthropology and American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she is the director of the American Indian Studies Program. She is the author of Talking Indian: Identity and Language Revitalization in the Chickasaw Renaissance (University of Arizona Press, 2018) and Trickster Academy (University of Arizona Press, forthcoming).
