Thirteen of St. Joseph County’s 16 townships plan to take part in the 2021 matching-fund, road-improvement offer made by the county’s road commission.
St. Joseph County commissioner Dan Czajkowski addressed the topic Tuesday during the board’s meeting.
The matter had been discussed at a recent meeting of the roads committee, which typically involves township officials and representatives from the road commission.
Combined, the participating townships are committing about $1 million to improve local roads. That amount will be matched by the road commission as part of a program now in its third year.
“That’s $2 million going into local roads; it’s phenomenal,” Czajkowski said. “That number was unheard of in the past. The situation is working and it just shows you what happens when everybody is on the same page, they’re talking back and forth, they’re explaining their situation and we’re getting things done.”
