Nostalgia wastes no time. I am only a few days away from graduating and am already flooded with contentment as I reflect on my four years at FSU. Four years ago, I prepared to attend my first semester of college during Summer C, with no hesitation that I was about to experience the best years of my life. I was ready to start fresh and completely reinvent myself. Now, four years later, I can confidently say that FSU not only gave me four of the best years, but more importantly, taught me to appreciate the journey that led up to graduation, and the journey that continues after graduation.

Florida State s history documented by university archivists

Florida State s history documented by university archivists Ella Hechlik Florida State University is well-known for its history and the names, stories and myths that go along with it. From the kissing bench to the constant name-changing of the university, it is hard not to notice the history of the campus. However, most students are probably unaware of the work that the University Library puts into archiving and looking into the past, and of the fascinating and long history of FSU.   Back in 2006, history professor Jennifer Koslow and her students put together an extensive timeline of the university and the major (and minor) events that took place from 1851 to 1993. It was a student-run project that discussed everything from when women were allowed to wear Bermuda shorts to when students celebrated the end of World War I.

FSU celebrates 170th anniversary over the weekend

FSU celebrates 170th anniversary over the weekend Ella Hechlik Across campus this past weekend, on Jan. 22-24, students were seen everywhere celebrating Florida State University s 170-year anniversary from its establishment as a seminary in 1851. Known originally as the West Florida Seminar, FSU did not become the Florida State College for Women until 1905. It stayed that way until May 15, 1947 when the college officially became known as Florida State University and started accepting all genders.  To celebrate 170 years of success, multiple organizations across campus held socially-distanced events and activities that students could participate in to learn more about FSU and commemorate its history. Students were encouraged to post about what makes FSU special to them, and to share favorite memories as well as dress in garnet and gold for the weekend.

FSU MLK week reflects on Martin Luther King Jr s principles of nonviolence and honors black women

FSU MLK week reflects on Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles of nonviolence and honors black women Aurelie Jean Baptiste It is an understatement to say that we live in uncertain times. Although COVID-19 and political pressure has challenged the future of our country, we look to the leaders in our lives to continue to inspire us to rise above our differences and disagreements. One of the leaders that have inspired change despite great opposition during his time was Martin Luther King Jr.  As the time to reflect on King approaches, Florida State University will honor Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting its 33rd annual MLK week. The celebrations will be starting on Monday, Jan.18 with a drive-through parade and concluding on Friday, Jan. 22.
