cyprus has become a major landing point for britons flying out to safety, before heading onwards to the uk. our correspondent caroline hawley has the latest from there, and a warning report does show some graphic images of injuries that one doctor sustained while escaping from sudan. this is what counts for a ceasefire in the capital, khartoum. it s less than two weeks since fighting erupted. so much damage already done. on the scale of human suffering growing by the day. and the scale of human suffering caused by this conflict is growing by the day. the journey to the airfield is fraught with risk and time is running out now for any british national wanting to escape. for the past few days people have been queuing to get out with flights leaving day and night. this footage was filmed by a british woman who had to leave her young nieces and nephews behind. because they don t have uk passports or visas. we ve been told that officials on the ground back in sudan can exercise some discret
that s where we find larry live near the seaport where evacuees have been arriving. can you talk about how the evacuation process has been playing out? reporter: this is the main landing point for evacuees from port sudan on the red sea. and a lot of people are making the arduous journey, sometimes up to 30 hours, from khartoum through a war zone really to try to make it to port sudan and get on a ship run by the saudis to get across to here in jetta and from here they can go to other countries. the saudis ahave evacuated 100 people. they come from 80 nationalities. including american citizens. the state department guidance, the guidance from the embassy this khartoum that is evacuated is it s too dangerous to coordinate an evacuation of private u.s. citizens to many
around 80 migrants clinging onto pieces of that boat have been found alive so far, some brought back to shore, wrapped in blankets, huddled together. at least 58 dead, rows of coffins laid out near the beach. from the air, the italian coast guard scouring the mediterranean sea. divers pulling out a body and emergency services combing the beach. the debris everywhere, peppered with personal belongings, scattered sneakers and backpacks. italian officials believe more than 150 migrants including women and children, at least one of them a newborn, from afghanistan, pakistan, iran and somalia, setting sail from turkey several days ago. their over crowded wooden boat no match for these rough seas, crashing into rocks and breaking apart. the mediterranean sea is considered to be one of the most dangerous crossings for migrants, but it s also the main landing point to enter europe. many of them escaping conflicts and poverty. the search for a better future outweighs those risks.
