baha, california, and other parts of mexico. hurricane kay is expected to produce dangerous storm surges and coastal flooding. it s expected to start battering the coast in earnest in the hours ahead. and in the atlantic a hurricane watch has been issued for the island of bermuda. hurr hurricane earl is set to past east of the island and expected to become a major hurricane. let s bring in cnn meteorologist pedram. governors in mexico opening shelters in advance of this storm system at one point just about 24 hours ago still prompted hurricane warnings off the central coast of mexico and tracking 90 mile per hour winds. landfall potential within the next 24 hours around the west
into southwest florida. the timing goes tuesday. overnight we ll see wind gusts continue to pick up. these are low lying areas, so the storm surge is really going to be an issue. then we ll watch another landfall potential overnight wednesday going into your thursday. we re going to be losing some movement with this storm and it continues all the way into the carolina coast into parts of west virginia as well. then it makes its way offshore. so we do have hurricane warnings that are currently in place across central cuba into that area, southwest cuba as well, and then look at this. these alerts, they spread across the keys into southwest florida. expect in the next 12 hours, kasie, these to change into tropical storm warnings. all right. be careful out there. janessa webb, thanks for being out there this morning. we really appreciate it. let s go over america s fast
tremendous amount of rainfall in the past several hours. we re beginning to see really heavier bands to push toward this region in the next few hours. some of the models indicating potentially 15-plus inches of rainfall in charleston and places like isle of palms. all of this could be a catastrophic sort of scenario for places such as charleston with a storm such as this, category 3 parked just offshore. landfall potential here going to be most likely thursday overnight and into early friday morning. at this point it looks anywhere from wilmington to the outer banks around north carolina there are going to be the most likely scenario for landfall, potentially at that point, rosemary, a strong category 2 when it makes landfall early friday morning. all right. thanks for keeping an eye on that track. appreciate it, pedram javaheri. of course we all know the u.s. president is not one to
toward charleston, we think sometime into the early morning hours there was thursday. notice the hurricane-force winds really begin to interact with the land there as we approach myrtle beach. we think landfall is around wilmington or cape hatteras region before the storm pushes away. we ve been tracking the system for upwards of 11 days now. really going to have significant impacts across a large reaching area. the storm surge potential up to four to seven feet across portions of the carolinas. charleston harbor expecting a ten-foot river crest, only second to hurricane hugo in 1989. hugo was a category four. this storm looks to be a category two on approach. at this point, all models want to push it just away from the coast of south carolina. north carolina doesn t look as lucky here as we approach this and the model confidence increases a little when it comes to landfall potential. again thursday, somewhere around the eastern coast of north carolina. guys? thank you so much.
