Source: 1 NEWS More than a year after the Save Our Unique Landscape (SOUL) occupied the land and claimed mana whenua, a binding memorandum of understanding (He Pūmautanga) has been signed by Kīngitanga, the Crown and Auckland Council.  Housing Minister Megan Woods said the land will be bought for $29.9 million under the Land for Housing Programme, with the intent it would avoid issues with the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process.

The Government will purchase the land at Ihumātao for $29.9 million, Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson has confirmed, in a deal signed off by the Kīngitanga, the Crown and Auckland Council.  I want to thank all the parties involved for working together to come to this agreement, Robertson said on Thursday, following more than a year of negotiations over how to settle the land dispute.

Press Release – New Zealand Government An agreement has been reached on the future of the land at Ihumātao, Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson announced today. “A Memorandum of Understanding (He Pūmautanga) has been signed by the Kīngitanga, the Crown and Auckland Council which sets out how parties will work together to decide the future of the land. “I want to thank all the parties involved for working together to come to this agreement. I particularly want to thank Kīngi Tuheitia and his officials for their leadership of this process. He Pūmautanga represents the starting point for the future of Ihumātao,” Grant Robertson said.
