A NEW university campus could be up and running in Barrow in three years. The University of Cumbria has signed a partnership agreement with Lancaster University to support the new university campus in the town. The two universities will collaborate on research partnerships with local businesses and on courses offering the best subject strengths from both of the higher education institutions. The University of Cumbria will work closely with key businesses, including BAE Systems, and with Furness College, in order to ensure that courses prepare graduates for career success through higher level skills. Simon Fell, MP for Barrow and Furness, said a university campus would expand what s on offer for young people in Barrow.

Lancaster University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Schofield has announced a £400 “goodwill” rent payment for students who are unable to return to campus in the Lent term due to the national lockdown. It comes in response to a prominent rent strike from on-campus students.
The Vice-Chancellor specified that this payment is on top of rent repayments offered to on-campus students who were unable to return to campus in the summer term of the 2019/2020 year as a result of the first national lockdown. Within an email he stated: “Altogether this means we will have returned £10m in total to Lancaster students during the course of the pandemic.
