Everyone enjoys receiving mail and hopes some will be delivered to their mailbox every day. Within this writer’s lifetime we have gone from mail only in a mailbox on the porch or along the road to receiving mail in a mailbox on our computer or phone. For me (and most other folks) that “real” card or note that is delivered to your home is extra special. Someone had to plan ahead and make a little more effort to get it to you on time.
All postal employees should be appreciated and remembered for their service, but space allows only room to remember one today. Lancaster native Ernest H. Karcher (1909-1984) delivered mail for 22 years, 1947-1969. When his retirement was recognized in the E-G (8 Nov 1969) Ernest mentioned he would not miss “getting in and out of a mail truck 17 times in 20 minutes.”

Junction City Man Dies in All Purpose Vehicle Accident
The Lancaster Post of the Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal All Purpose Vehicle accident in Perry County. It happened Sunday just after 12:30 a.m. Troopers say 56-year-old Jerry Spohn of Junction City was traveling southwest on Garey Road NE toward Old Junction Road N and attempted to turn left onto Old Junction Road N. The patrol say Spohn lost control, went off the road, struck a stop sign, and the vehicle overturned. Spohn was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger, 52-year-old Shiela Spears-Hill, also of Junction City was partially ejected and flown by MidFlight to Grand Medical Center in Columbus. Troopers say impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash that remains under investigation.

Perry County Fatal Accident Investigated It happened Tuesday morning on County Road 30 in Thorn Township.
Troopers say 57-year-old Nathan Smith of Pleasantville was driving north on County Road 30 when 67-year-old Nancy Bashore of Thornville was attempting to cross the roadway and was struck by Smith’s vehicle.
Bashore was taken to Licking Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
