The former Abbey cinema on Church Road North
Campaigners are celebrating after a former cinema which was set for demolition has been recommended for listed status by Historic England. Earlier this month supermarket chain Lidl announced their intention to tear down the former Abbey Cinema building on Church Road North in Wavertree, which was deemed to be beyond economic repair. Lidl said they would be submitting plans to the council to knock down the the former picture palace that features in the original draft lyrics to The Beatles song In My Life and build a new supermarket on the site.
A former cinema in Liverpool that gave John Lennon many “happy hours” has been saved from demolition thanks to a campaign by locals.
The Abbey Cinema, built in 1939, has been granted grade II listed status by Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden following calls to protect it from SAVE Britain’s Heritage and local residents group Love Wavertree.
Lidl announced their plans to demolish the building and build a new store on April 7 2021, which prompted a backlash from residents and the heritage charity.
