While the MNF and the Congress are vying for power, a new party, Zoram People s Movement (ZPM), led by a former cop, is being seen as a strong contender.
The opposition Congress party in Mizoram has requested the Election Commission of India to change the date of counting ballots for the upcoming elections. They argue that December 3, the scheduled date for counting, is a Sunday and a sacred day for Christians. In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, the Congress president urged the commission to reschedule the counting between Monday and Friday. The Election Commission has announced that voting for the 40 assembly seats in Mizoram will be held on November 7, and elaborate security arrangements have been put in place.
