Lalo de Almeida. Lalo de Almeida has worked as a photographer for Folha de S.Paulo for 25 years.
He has been working on documentary projects such as The Man and the Land, concerning traditional populations and their relation with the environment in Brazil. He has also produced short video documentaries and multimedia narratives, creating a series of internationally awarded projects such as A World of Walls, The Battle of Belo Monte, and The Climate Crisis.
In 2021, he was named the Ibero-American photographer of the year by the Poy Latam (Pictures of the Year Latam). His story Pantanal Ablaze was awarded first place in the environment category at the World Press Photo competition in 2021.

In 2020, tens of thousands of people protested peacefully against the country s longtime ruler, Alexander Lukashenko, with many of the female demonstrators wearing white dresses. Lukashenko ordered the protests to be put down by force. The woman in this photo wore a wedding dress as a symbol against the violence. The contrast could hardly be greater.
Hugging for freedom
Wearing white or red, the demonstrators stand out against the military uniforms of the Belarusian security forces. This young woman was also protesting against Lukashenko, but instead of putting on a wedding dress she used physical contact as a symbol and gave this apparently very young soldier a hug. She was demonstrating for peace and freedom, but the soldier didn t appear to know quite how t
