4 tips to minimize heat stress in dairy cows

Jun 15, 2021 to Jun 17, 2021 Climbing temperatures may be inevitable this time of year, but dairy cow productivity doesn’t have to be a casualty of heat stress. The key to success is minimizing decreases in dry matter intake and keeping rumens, and your herd, operating at peak efficiency. “Reduced intake can lead to digestive upsets and lowered milk and milk component production,” says Tony Hall, with Lallemand Animal Nutrition. “But investing in heat abatement technology and in your herd’s ration from dry cows to lactating cows is crucial. Focusing on quality forages and feedstuffs, plus management changes, will help diminish the negative influence heat stress has on feed intakes, your herd and your bottom line.”

Real time data on heat stress in cows is UK first

The first project in the UK to give real time data on heat stress in cows has been launched. With limited UK data available on the impact of heat stress in indoor and outdoor herds, Lallemand Animal Nutrition and Dr Tom Chamberlain, founder of Chalcombe Ltd, are launching the first ever UK based, real time trial to support farmers this summer. “The biggest issue facing UK farmers when it comes to heat stress is that our cows aren’t adapted for higher temperatures. Because of this, and the fact that most of the data we have comes from hot countries, the threshold could be significantly lower than what we currently think,” explained Mark McFarland, feed additive product manager at Lallemand Animal Nutrition.

Lallemand to track heat stress risk for UK dairy cows

There is limited data available on the impact of heat stress in indoor and outdoor UK dairy herds, so Lallemand Animal Nutrition and Chalcombe Ltd, an independent dairy consultancy company, are launching the first ever UK-based, real time trial to support farmers, in this regard, this summer. “The aim of the project it to raise awareness among producers in the UK and Ireland to the dangers of heat stress, we wanted to pilot this specific project in the UK due to the fact there is limited data on the thresholds for cows in the UK and Ireland; there is only data from cows in significantly hotter countries,” a spokesperson for Lallemand Animal Nutrition told us.
